One Health Day

Global One Health Day is observed annually on November 3rd to raise global awareness about the One Health approach to complex health challenges involving people, animals, plants, and the environment.

This year, 2023, the Somali One Health Centre of Abrar University celebrates jointly with Nova Diagnostics and Research in Mogadishu, Somalia, to educate participants on the urgent need for One Health actions in Somalia and the role of laboratories in One Health practice.

The theme for this year is promoting the One Health approach in Somalia.

Keynote Speakers

Dr. Ahmed A. Hassan-Kadle, PhD
Topic: Why does Somalia need to adopt a One Health approach?
Dr. Ahmed Kadle is the Rector of Abrar University and Associate Professor of Epidemiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Abrar University, Somalia. He also founded the Somali One Health Centre, the Oog Dairy Factory, and the Sara Agro-Industrial Development Company. He worked as a veterinarian with the International Committee of the Red Cross in Somalia to strengthen Somali communities’ resilience by keeping their livestock healthy and productive. Dr. Kadle supports several communities and research organisations, as well as the Somalia Ministry of Livestock, Forestry, and Range, on a freelance basis, all of which are working on issues related to livestock development. Dr. Kadle received his BVSc. and MSc. from the University of Bahri, Sudan, and his PhD and Postdoctorate from the Federal University of Parana in Brazil. His research activities focus on the epidemiology of vector and vector-borne diseases that have a global One Health aspect and promote One Health institutionalisation and operationalization in Somalia.
 
Mr. Abdullahi A. Abdiaziz, MSc
Topic: The role of the laboratory in One Health practice 
Mr. Abdullahi is a senior lecturer at the College of Medicine and Health Science of Abrar University and Head of Nova Institute at Nova Diagnostics and Research. His first degree (BSc MLS) was received from Jazeera University, Somalia and his MSc (Immunology) from BUHS, Bangladesh.
